The clothing manufacturer ATTRACTION announces the revalorization of 100% of textile scraps associated with the production of its Quebec-made Ethica brand!

Production d’Ethica fabriquée au Québec

The promotional clothing manufacturer ATTRACTION is proud to announce the revalorization of 100% of textile scraps associated with the production of its Quebec-made clothing brand Ethica.

Despite many efforts and investments to limit waste related to cutting clothing at the source, including the purchase of automated positioning software and an automatic cutter, an inevitable loss of approximately 18% of fabric previously ended up in landfill sites. An agreement made with Mécanec Transformation Textile Inc. (MTT Inc.) now makes it possible to avoid landfilling around 30 tonnes of textile waste, the equivalent of approximately 5 to 6 elephants!

“We are very proud of this new development! We have been looking for ways to upcycle our textile scraps for several years. It was unacceptable to send the remnants of our quality organic cotton and recycled polyester apparel to the landfill.” says Julia Gagnon, Vice President of Operations.

ATTRACTION’S textile fiber upcycling project is the result of the work of an experienced team in the garment industry, with the support from partners such as Yannick Bolduc, innovation advisor for the MRC du Granit, who directed Attraction toward MTT Inc.

Carbon neutral company and recycled cotton

Since 2022, Attraction has been carbon neutral and offsets 100% of its scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions through Less, a carbon offset organization. Attraction also produces Ethica bags, t-shirts and fleece using recycled cotton. “The ultimate goal would be to eventually use our own textile scraps to create a locally-made recycled cotton yarn that could then be used to manufacture our Ethica products,” mentions Julia Gagnon, Vice President of Operations.

The textile scraps collected from Attraction’s factories are shipped to MTT Inc. (1) They are then shredded (2,3) and used to make a non-woven product used as acoustic underlayment (4).

Since the acquisition of Attraction in 2017, the new generation has multiplied initiatives to minimize the company’s environmental impact. “We’ve launched several products over the years to upcycle our remnants, in addition to recycling unsold inventory by using it for screen printing tests, rags, or offering it discounted or free of charge. No clothing is thrown away at Attraction and we’re very proud of that,” states Sébastien Jacques, Vice President of Business Development.

Mecanec inc.

Sylvain Couture, an engineer by training and founding President of MTT Inc. (Mécanec transformation textile inc.), offers an innovative textile transformation technology stemming from a strong environmental awareness and a desire to transform a problem into a green solution. The textile residues are thus transformed and resold to manufacturers of padding, non-wovens or insulating and soundproofing products, who want to offer eco-friendly options to their customers.

Thanks to the expertise of MTT Inc.’s team, the burial of hundreds of tons of textile waste is avoided. An excellent example of the circular economy!

Being still in its first steps, MTT inc is still looking for textile rejects as well as manufacturing companies interested in purchasing its finished product.
